Bon Appetit Magazine hails Hapa Izakaya as one of its top five favorite Izakayas in North America
Bon Appetit-May2011
(VANCOUVER, BC) – Hapa Izakaya is thrilled to be hailed by Bon Appetit as one of its top five favorite izakayas in all of North America. Hapa was the only one in Canada to make the list.
In the May issue Bon Appetit acknowledges the recent explosion of izakaya and explains their appeal. In addition to Hapa Izakaya, the magazine lists Biwa in Portland; Kushi in Washington, D.C.; Miso Izakaya in Atlanta; Aburiya in LA; and Nombre in San Francisco as top spots.
About Hapa Restaurants
When Lea and Justin Ault introduced Hapa in 2003 they exploded the izakaya concept in Vancouver. Hapa Izakaya’s combination of a sexy room, well-priced Japanese tapas, cocktails and premium sake set the bar high for the host of contenders that followed. There are now three Hapa Izakaya locations. Last year, Hapa was the first izakaya to join the Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise™ seafood conservation program and is one of only a handful of Japanese restaurant partners in the program to-date. Earlier this year the Aults opened Hapa Umi in downtown’s Coal Harbour. The upscale Hapa Umi offers the next level of Japanese dining. Visit www.hapaizakaya.com or www.hapaumi.com for information or follow @HapaIzakaya and @HapaUmi on Twitter.

We’re thrilled about our big-sister restaurant Hapa Umi’s great review in The Vancouver Sun. Respected restaurant critic, Mia Stainsby awards it four stars (out of five) and says she “was swept away by the meal and service.” Read the entire review here but consider your self warned: reading review may induce intense cravings for “knockout” edamame ricotta ravioli, Peace River lamb with truffled celeriac purée and dashi couscous, and passion fruit mochi ice cream.

We’re playing with the big fish now! Hapa Izakaya won Silver in the Best Casual Chain category in the 22nd Annual Vancouver Magazine Restaurant Awards. As “one judge marveled” Hapa Izakaya is “a chain that never feels like a chain.” Well thanks!
